Buenos Aires and Uruguay face each other across the Río de la Plata, and ferries run to Colonia del Sacramento and to Montevideo. A day in Colonia is one of the most common excursions from the Argentine capital. It is also an international crossing: an Argentina-only plan stops working on the Uruguayan side. The river is wide, so do not count on land signal for the whole crossing, and on arrival the phone has to register on a Uruguayan network.
