What to know about mobile data in Japan

Japan's networks cover cities, rail corridors and most towns with 4G and 5G. Signal thins out on mountain trails and small outlying islands. 3G is gone: the last network, NTT Docomo's, closed on 31 March 2026, so your phone needs 4G on bands the host network uses. Most travel eSIMs here are data only, which matters little day to day because messaging in Japan runs on LINE and other apps, not SMS.

Before you go

  • Find out which Japanese network your plan roams on, then check that operator's area map for hiking routes and remote islands. Coverage differs between networks outside the cities.
  • Download offline maps for any mountain area before you set off. Valleys and trails are where data disappears first.
  • Japan and South Korea are often visited on one trip. Compare a two-country plan against two single-country plans on our route page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest eSIM for Japan?

On October 5, 2026, the cheapest plan we found was aloSIM with 1 GB, 1 day at $3.50. The lowest price per gigabyte was aloSIM: 50 GB, 10 days at $27.50, which is $0.55/GB.

Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Japan?

Yes. 8 of the providers we track sell unlimited plans for Japan; the cheapest is Holafly at $3.90 for 1 day. Unlimited plans often slow down after a daily amount, so read the fair-use note on the provider page.

Which regional eSIM plans include Japan?

23 of the 69 regional and global products we track list Japan: Ubigi Asia, Ubigi Best Asia, Holafly Asia, Airalo Asialink, Nomad APAC (14 countries plan), aloSIM Asia, Ubigi Best World, Nomad APAC (21 countries plan).

Will an older phone still work in Japan now that 3G is switched off?

Any phone that supports eSIM also supports 4G, so the real check is band support. All Japanese operators have closed 3G, the last on 31 March 2026, which means there is no fallback if your phone lacks the host network's LTE bands.

Do I need a Japanese phone number as a visitor?

Usually not. A data-only eSIM covers maps, translation and messaging. Some local booking services ask for a domestic number, and in that case your hotel can often make the reservation for you.
