Overland routes between Peru and Chile pass through one crossing, between Tacna and Arica, on the way from Arequipa to San Pedro de Atacama or Santiago. Both countries police phone IMEIs on local lines: Peru through a whitelist, Chile through its multiband registry. Both regulators have said that visitors who stay on roaming have nothing to register. The catch is distance. In northern Chile, main-road stretches without mobile signal have been reported to the regulator, mostly in the Antofagasta region.
