What to know about mobile data in Chile

Chile requires phones used with a Chilean SIM to be registered under its multiband rule, with 30 days of service before blocking. The regulator Subtel has said visitors who use roaming or Wi-Fi have no procedure to follow, and a travel eSIM is a roaming line. Geography is the harder problem. Main-road stretches with no mobile signal have been reported to Subtel, including parts of the Carretera Austral and the road from San Pedro de Atacama to the Jama pass.

Before you go

  • Putting a Chilean SIM in your own phone for a long stay? Register the handset within 30 days through a certifier listed at multibanda.cl.
  • On the Carretera Austral and the high roads of the Atacama, plan for hours offline. Download maps and keep bookings saved on the phone.
  • Entel began closing its 2G network in stages in 2024. An eSIM phone is unaffected, but an old spare handset may find nothing to connect to.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest eSIM for Chile?

On October 5, 2026, the cheapest plan we found was Ubigi with 1 GB, 7 days at $4.00. The lowest price per gigabyte was Yesim: 20 GB, 30 days at $35.40, which is $1.77/GB.

Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Chile?

Yes. 6 of the providers we track sell unlimited plans for Chile; the cheapest is Holafly at $5.90 for 1 day. Unlimited plans often slow down after a daily amount, so read the fair-use note on the provider page.

Which regional eSIM plans include Chile?

21 of the 69 regional and global products we track list Chile: Ubigi Best World, aloSIM South America, Airalo Latamlink (Latin America), Ubigi World, Saily Latin America, Airalo Discover, Saily Global (121 countries), Airalo Discover+.

Do I have to register my phone in Chile as a tourist?

Not while you stay on roaming, which is how a travel eSIM issued abroad connects. Registration applies when a phone bought outside Chile is used with a Chilean SIM, and that phone gets 30 days of service before it is blocked.

Is there mobile signal on the road from San Pedro de Atacama to Argentina?

Do not count on it. The route to the Jama pass is among the stretches reported to Subtel as having no coverage, so data returns only once you reach a covered area on the other side, and only if Argentina is in your plan.
