What to know about mobile data in Mexico

Mexico introduced mandatory registration of mobile lines in January 2026. It applies to Mexican lines: visitors who buy a local SIM register with a passport, while the telecom regulator CRT said tourists roaming on a foreign line are exempt, and that it would revisit roaming rules after the 2026 World Cup. Coverage is solid in cities and resort corridors and uneven in rural and mountainous areas. The regulator publishes a 4G coverage map by operator.

Before you go

  • Check current registration rules shortly before you travel. The regulator said in 2026 that it would define how roaming users are treated at a later date.
  • Driving between towns in Baja California, Chiapas or the Sierra Madre, save maps offline. Signal follows the highways and stops between settlements.
  • Trips that combine Mexico with the US are common. Some plans sold as North America leave Mexico out, so read the country list.
