On an eSIM, 'North America' can mean the US and Canada, or those two plus Mexico. Caribbean islands, Central America and US territories such as Puerto Rico are rarely implied and need to be named. Hawaii and Alaska are US states, but they are served by a different mix of networks than the lower 48, so check coverage there too. A regional plan pays off on cross-border trips: a drive from Seattle to Vancouver, or a US visit with a week in Mexico.
- Look for Mexico by name. It is the country most often left out of plans labelled North America.
- All three countries are large with empty stretches. Which local network the plan uses matters more here than in compact regions.
- Cruises from US ports to the Caribbean or Alaska use satellite networks at sea. Keep the phone in airplane mode on board.
