What to know about mobile data in Ireland
Ireland is in the EU roaming area. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, which is not. The land border is open, and phones on either side pick up the other jurisdiction's networks, a problem the two regulators have examined together. On the network side, Vodafone closed 3G in October 2024 and Eir began retiring its 3G county by county on 1 October 2026, starting in Donegal. 2G stays on, so older phones keep calls and lose usable data.

- Driving through Donegal, Monaghan or Louth? Select an Irish network manually if your plan does not include the UK.
- Visiting Belfast or the Giant's Causeway from Dublin is a trip to the UK. Confirm the United Kingdom is in the plan.

Does an Ireland eSIM work in Northern Ireland?
Only if the plan also names the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland uses UK networks, and the UK left the EU roaming regime, so a plan for Ireland or for EU countries does not extend there by default.
