What to know about mobile data in Turkey

Turkey has a device registration system: a foreign-bought phone used on Turkish networks is cut off after roughly 120 days unless its IMEI is registered and a fee paid. A normal holiday is far shorter than that, so visitors do not need to register. Turkey is outside the EU roaming area. Authorities have also slowed access to social and messaging platforms during political tension, most recently documented in September 2025.

Before you go

  • Staying longer than about four months? Read the current BTK rules before you travel. Sources differ on whether time spent on a roaming line counts toward the limit.
  • Turkey is usually absent from EU-based roaming allowances. If your route mixes Greece or Bulgaria with Turkey, confirm Turkey is named in the plan.
  • If a messaging app slows down during a period of unrest, it may be a network-level restriction, not a fault with your eSIM.

Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Turkey?

Do I need to register my phone in Turkey?

Not for a short visit. Registration applies to foreign-bought phones that stay on Turkish networks beyond roughly 120 days. For longer stays, check the telecom regulator BTK's current rules, including how roaming lines are treated.

Are social media and messaging apps blocked in Turkey?

Not permanently, but they have been throttled. In September 2025 the monitoring group NetBlocks reported restrictions on X, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp and others. Whether a roaming eSIM is affected depends on how the provider routes your traffic, so do not count on immunity.
