What to know about mobile data in Hong Kong
Hong Kong has its own mobile networks, its own regulator and its own internet rules, separate from mainland China. The mainland's filtering system does not operate there, so Google, WhatsApp and Instagram load on local connections, although a small number of sites have been blocked under the national security law since 2021. Plans normally treat Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China as three destinations. Local SIM cards need real-name registration, a rule written for cards issued by Hong Kong operators.
