What to know about mobile data in Thailand

Buying a Thai SIM means registering in person with your passport, under rules from the regulator NBTC that also cap how many SIMs a foreigner may hold. Those rules are written for Thai SIMs, which is one reason visitors choose a travel eSIM set up before the flight. The NBTC has also asked the main operators for plans to shut 2G and 3G, with a 2026 target reported, so think of Thailand as a 4G and 5G country.

Before you go

  • LINE is the everyday messaging app in Thailand and Grab is the common ride app. Both run on data, so install and sign in before you land.
  • On smaller islands and in national parks, coverage depends on which Thai network your plan uses. Save maps and booking confirmations offline.
  • Thailand is often combined with Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos. Regional Asia plans differ a lot on which of those they include.

Which regional eSIM plans include Thailand?

Do I have to register with my passport to use an eSIM in Thailand?

Thai SIMs and eSIMs sold by Thai operators require passport registration in person. A travel eSIM issued abroad is a roaming line from another country, and its provider handles any identity checks, if it has them, at purchase.

Will one eSIM cover Thailand and its neighbours?

Only if each country is named in the plan. Regional Asia plans vary, so check Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar in particular. Our route pages show which plans cover your exact list.
