What to know about mobile data in South Korea

South Korea's quirk is maps. For years the government refused to let detailed map data leave the country, which left Google Maps without proper navigation. In February 2026 it approved the export under security conditions, so this may improve, but Naver Map and KakaoMap remain the dependable options. On the network side, 2G is closed and SK Telecom stopped new 3G sign-ups in August 2026 with the aim of ending 3G by late 2027.

Before you go

  • Install Naver Map or KakaoMap before you arrive and test a route. Both have English interfaces and need data for live transit directions.
  • Most travel eSIMs for Korea are data only. Some Korean apps verify identity through a domestic number, so check whether a service you need accepts foreign sign-ups.
  • Seoul and Tokyo are a frequent pairing. Compare one two-country plan against two separate ones on our Japan and South Korea route page.

Can I get by without a Korean phone number?

For transport, maps, translation and messaging, yes. Some local delivery, booking and payment services ask for verification through a Korean number, which a data-only travel eSIM does not provide.
