What to know about mobile data in Singapore

Singapore is a single city, so coverage is not the issue. The three operators retired 3G on 31 July 2024, and the network is 4G and 5G only. The local quirk is the neighbours: along the coast, phones can pick up signals from Malaysia or Indonesia, and a Singapore-only plan will not work on those. Most visitors also cross to Johor Bahru or Batam at some point, which is a different country with a different network.

Before you go

  • Near Woodlands, Tuas or the southern coast, choose the Singapore network manually if your phone keeps drifting to a foreign one.
  • Day trip to Johor Bahru or Batam? Malaysia and Indonesia need to be in the plan, or you will have no data once you cross.
  • Grab is the standard ride app and runs on data alone once your account is set up, so a data-only eSIM is enough for getting around.

Why does my phone show a Malaysian network while I am in Singapore?

Signals from neighbouring countries reach Singapore's coastal areas, and phones sometimes attach to them. Singapore's operators advise switching off data roaming or selecting the network manually there. On a travel eSIM, manual selection is the fix.

Does a Singapore eSIM work in Johor Bahru or on Batam?

No, unless Malaysia or Indonesia is also listed. Both are a short trip away but are separate countries with their own networks.
