What to know about mobile data in Australia

Australia's networks reach nearly the whole population and only a minority of the land. Outside towns and main highways, large parts of the interior have no mobile coverage at all. Vodafone closed 3G in January 2024, then Telstra and Optus from 28 October 2024. Since then the regulator ACMA requires carriers to block phones that cannot make emergency calls over 4G, which has caught some handsets bought overseas. Which Australian network your eSIM uses matters a lot in regional areas.

Before you go

  • Before an outback drive, check the coverage map of the network your plan uses. The three Australian networks differ widely outside cities.
  • Carry offline maps and, for remote tracks, a satellite communicator or beacon. A travel eSIM cannot help where no mast exists.
  • Australia and New Zealand are often booked together. They are separate countries with separate networks, so confirm both are in the plan.

Frequently asked questions

On October 5, 2026, the cheapest plan we found was Yesim with 1 GB, 30 days at $3.00. The lowest price per gigabyte was Nomad: 50 GB, 30 days at $32.00, which is $0.64/GB.

Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Australia?

Yes. 7 of the providers we track sell unlimited plans for Australia; the cheapest is Holafly at $3.90 for 1 day. Unlimited plans often slow down after a daily amount, so read the fair-use note on the provider page.

Which regional eSIM plans include Australia?

16 of the 69 regional and global products we track list Australia: Nomad APAC (14 countries plan), Ubigi Best World, Nomad APAC (21 countries plan), Ubigi World, Airalo Discover, Saily Global (121 countries), Airalo Discover+, Holafly Global.

Could my phone be blocked on Australian networks?

It is possible for older or grey-import models. After the 3G shutdown, ACMA rules require carriers to block phones that cannot place emergency calls over 4G VoLTE. Recent mainstream phones are generally fine, and if yours is an unusual model, ask the provider before you fly.

Is there mobile coverage in the outback?

Only in towns, roadhouses and along some highways. Most of the landmass has no terrestrial coverage, even though population coverage is close to complete.
