What to know about mobile data in Taiwan
Taiwan's carriers began shutting down 3G at the end of June 2024, with the approval of the regulator NCC. A phone without 4G voice, known as VoLTE, can no longer place calls there, emergency numbers included. Data on an eSIM phone is unaffected. Most visitors stay on the west side of the island, where the cities are. In the central mountains coverage is partial, and the forestry agency has installed signs on popular trails marking where phones get a signal.
Before you go
- Hiking in the high mountains? Watch for the trail signs that mark mobile coverage points, and download maps before leaving the trailhead.
- If you need voice calls, confirm your phone supports VoLTE on the host network. Data-only use does not depend on it.
- Visiting Kinmen or Matsu, close to the mainland coast? Select a Taiwanese network manually so the phone does not attach to a mainland Chinese one.

In places. The government has funded base stations along backcountry trails and near mountain huts, and coverage signs show where a phone can connect. Between those points, expect none.
