What to know about mobile data in New Zealand

New Zealand finished closing 3G on 31 March 2026, when the last of its three operators completed the switch-off. A phone that relies on 3G for voice can no longer call at all, including the emergency number 111, and the industry body TCF warns that some imported phones do not work on local networks even when sold as 4G. One NZ has put the share of the country's land without traditional mobile coverage at about 40 percent.

Before you go

  • Before a road trip through Fiordland, the West Coast or the central North Island, download maps. Long stretches between towns have no signal.
  • Ask which New Zealand network your plan uses. The three operators do not cover the same rural areas, and each publishes a coverage map.
  • On multi-day walks, do not plan around your phone. Huts and tracks are mostly outside coverage, so carry a beacon for emergencies.

How much of New Zealand has no mobile coverage?

A large part of the land. One NZ described about 40 percent of the landmass as lacking traditional mobile coverage in 2025, mostly mountains, farmland and remote roads. Towns and main highways are covered.
