What to know about mobile data in Malaysia

Malaysia shut down 3G at the end of 2021 under the national Jendela programme, so it has been a 4G country for years, with 5G added since in populated areas. The country is split by the South China Sea: the peninsula has dense coverage along its west coast, while Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo are larger and more sparsely served outside their cities. One plan covers both halves, since it is a single country.

Before you go

  • For Borneo's interior, Kinabalu or the Mulu area, download maps and permits in Kota Kinabalu, Kuching or Miri before heading out.
  • Crossing the causeway from Singapore, your phone may hold a Singapore signal for a while. It needs Malaysia in the plan to keep data after that.
  • Grab covers rides and food across Malaysian cities and works on data alone once your account is set up.

Which regional eSIM plans include Malaysia?

Does a Malaysia eSIM cover Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo?

Yes, they are Malaysian states. Coverage outside the main towns is thinner than on the peninsula and depends on the Malaysian network your plan uses.

Is 3G still available in Malaysia?

No. The regulator MCMC ended 3G on 31 December 2021, and any eSIM-capable phone uses 4G or 5G anyway. 5G access depends on the plan and on your phone's bands.
