What to know about mobile data in Vietnam
Vietnam switched off 2G on the mainland in October 2024, after a short extension of the original September date, and the government has set September 2028 as the end for 3G. So the country is moving to 4G and 5G only. The shape of Vietnam matters: it is long and narrow, with mountains in the north and along the Lao border where signal is less dependable than on the coastal strip between the big cities.
Before you go
- Riding the northern mountain loops or trekking near Sa Pa, save offline maps first. Coverage there depends on which Vietnamese network your eSIM uses.
- Zalo is the messaging app many Vietnamese hotels, drivers and guides use. Installing it helps when someone asks to send you a location.
