What to know about mobile data in China

Mainland China filters the internet: Google services, WhatsApp, Instagram and many foreign sites are blocked on local connections. A travel eSIM is a roaming line, and roaming data is often routed through a gateway outside the mainland, where the filtering does not apply. That depends on the provider's routing, so confirm it before buying. Hotel and cafe Wi-Fi are always behind the firewall. Hong Kong and Macau are listed separately from the mainland in most plans.

Before you go

  • Install and activate your eSIM and any apps you need before departure. Many foreign app stores, sites and download links are hard to reach once you are on local Wi-Fi.
  • Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your foreign card in advance. Daily payments in China run on these apps, and they need data at the till.
  • If your route includes Hong Kong or Macau, check that the plan names them. They have their own networks and are not behind the firewall.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest eSIM for China?

On October 5, 2026, the cheapest plan we found was Yesim with 1 GB, 30 days at $3.36. The lowest price per gigabyte was aloSIM: 50 GB, 10 days at $30.00, which is $0.60/GB.

Is there an unlimited data eSIM for China?

Yes. 7 of the providers we track sell unlimited plans for China; the cheapest is Holafly at $3.90 for 1 day. Unlimited plans often slow down after a daily amount, so read the fair-use note on the provider page.

Which regional eSIM plans include China?

23 of the 69 regional and global products we track list China: Ubigi Asia, Ubigi Best Asia, Holafly Asia, Airalo Asialink, Nomad APAC (14 countries plan), aloSIM Asia, Ubigi Best World, Nomad APAC (21 countries plan).

Does a travel eSIM get around the Great Firewall?

Often, but not always. When your data is routed through a gateway outside mainland China, blocked services load normally, while plans that hand traffic to a local network are filtered like any Chinese SIM. Ask the provider how traffic is routed, and remember that Wi-Fi is filtered either way.

Can I get an eSIM from a Chinese operator as a visitor?

Not on a phone bought abroad, at least for iPhones. Apple states that only specific China mainland models support eSIM from mainland carriers, with activation in a carrier store, and that iPhones purchased elsewhere cannot install those profiles. Travel eSIMs issued by foreign operators are a different product and work through roaming.
