What to know about mobile data in Indonesia

Indonesia blocks phones whose IMEI is not registered, a rule aimed at imported handsets. Customs guidance separates two cases: visitors who keep a foreign SIM and roam do not register, and visitors who want an Indonesian SIM get access limited to 90 days. A travel eSIM issued abroad falls in the first case. The other reality is geography: thousands of islands, with strong service in Java and Bali and much less in the remote east.

Before you go

  • Staying more than 90 days and planning to use an Indonesian SIM? Register the IMEI with customs on arrival. There is a deadline counted from your arrival date.
  • Island hopping east of Bali, such as to Komodo or Raja Ampat, assume long stretches without data and download what you need in advance.
  • Gojek and Grab are the usual ride and delivery apps. Both need data, so install them and create your account before the trip.

Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Indonesia?

Yes. 7 of the providers we track sell unlimited plans for Indonesia; the cheapest is Holafly at $3.90 for 1 day. Unlimited plans often slow down after a daily amount, so read the fair-use note on the provider page.

Which regional eSIM plans include Indonesia?

Do I need to register my phone's IMEI in Indonesia to use a travel eSIM?

According to Indonesian customs guidance, visitors who keep using a foreign SIM on international roaming do not need to register. Registration matters when you put an Indonesian SIM in a phone bought abroad, especially past 90 days. Rules change, so check before a long stay.

Does one eSIM work across Bali, Lombok and the other islands?

Yes, it is one country, so there is no border to cross. What changes from island to island is signal strength, and that depends on the Indonesian network your plan roams on.
